General description of the collection: The Andrew S. Burt papers include speeches, articles, and clippings by or about General Burt, covering his entire life (1839-1915), including his military career (1861-1902). The speeches and accounts written by him focus on the Civil War (especially the Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky on January 19, 1862) and army life in the West following the Civil War. Biographical clippings additionally refer to his service in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. There are several items pertaining to his ancestors, the Gano family, including excerpts from a book tracing activities of members of the family (1775-1791). Also included is a copy of the order of Colonel Edmund P. Gaines (October 16th, 1813) assigning Major John Stiles Gano to command of the frontier of Ohio. One item, found in the newspaper clippings, is a published letter from John Johnston (October 10, 1857) recalling his experiences in the supply services for American troops in western Pennsylvania and Ohio and subsequently his observations as Indian agent to the tribes of the old Northwest Territory (1792-1857).
